  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee or boiling water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for salted caramel)
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter (for salted caramel)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (for salted caramel)
  • 1 tsp sea salt (for salted caramel)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salted Caramel Sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt sugar until it turns amber. Add butter and stir until melted. Slowly add cream while stirring until smooth. Stir in sea salt and let cool.
  2. Make the Chocolate Cake Batter: Combine flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in one bowl. In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Combine wet and dry ingredients until mixed well; then stir in hot coffee.
  3. Bake the Cakes: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and divide batter evenly. Bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool before removing from pans.
