Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 4 cups potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  3. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are fully blended.
  4. In your greased baking dish, spread half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer at the bottom. Top with half of the cooked ground beef followed by half of the chopped onion. Pour half of the prepared sauce over these layers. Repeat with remaining potatoes, ground beef, onion, and sauce.
  5. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top layer of your casserole.
  6. In a small bowl, combine breadcrumbs with melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture over the cheese layer for added crunch.
  7. Cover your baking dish with foil and bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes. Remove foil; bake an additional 15 minutes until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.
